Gareth Southgate has been urged to start Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Mason Mount together for England at Euro 2020.
Foden and Mount look set to be guaranteed starters under the Three Lions boss, whose side’s tournament kicks off against Croatia on Sunday, LIVE on talkSPORT from 2pm.
Despite his recent performances in England’s friendly wins over Austria and Romania, Grealish faces competition from Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling for a starting berth on the left wing.
But former West Ham and England striker Tony Cottee wants Southgate to play just one holding midfielder in Declan Rice to allow Grealish to line up alongside Foden and Mount.
Cottee, who won seven caps for England, told talkSPORT: “I like Jordan Henderson as a player, but he’s not fit.
“You’ve got to play Declan Rice as your holding midfielder and then you go and pick all of the talent to play in front of him.
“If it was me as a manager, I’d have Harry Kane up front and then the three players playing in my team before I’d even think about anything else would be Grealish, Foden and Mount.
“I’d have those three creative players and then you pick the rest of the team around it… whether that’s Rashford or Sterling.
“I think we all know what back four we’d play if everyone’s fit, we know who the goalkeeper is. That’s my message to Gareth – not that he’s listening to me and not that he cares what I think!
“But please, one holding midfielder and play the talented players because when you get into the latter stages, you need a Gazza [Paul Gascoigne] or a Glenn Hoddle or a Peter Beardsley.
“With this current group, we’ve got three outstanding talents – Grealish, Foden, Mount – play them and they can open up defences and make things happen.”
